vein treatment options for the summer

Why Varicose Veins Feel Worse in the Summer—and How to Get Relief

If your varicose veins seem to flare up the moment the weather warms, you’re not imagining it. Many of Dr. Ninia’s patients arrive at the Varicose Vein Center during the summer months describing the same thing: legs that ache more, swell faster, and feel heavier than they did a few months before. There are physical reasons behind this change, and you can ease this discomfort without having to wait until fall.

Why Does Summer Make Varicose Veins Worse?

When it’s hot outside, your blood vessels widen to help release the heat from your body. For healthy veins, this isn’t a problem. But if your valves are already weak, dilated veins give blood more room to pool in your lower legs, which intensifies the pressure and aching you feel.

Summer adds two more challenges. Warm weather and sweating also leave you dehydrated, and thicker blood is harder for your veins to move. Some seasonal foods can also come with a lot of salt and cause your body to retain more fluid. More fluid means more swelling, which ultimately causes more discomfort in veins that are already struggling.

The Summer Symptoms Patients Notice

Swelling and Heaviness

Your legs may feel fine first thing in the morning, but grow tight and tired as the day goes on. This leg swelling, heaviness and fatigue increase as blood and fluid collect in your lower legs throughout the day. By evening, your shoes may even start to feel snug.

Itching and Burning

Heat and dry summer air can make the skin over a varicose vein feel itchy or develop a burning sensation. These restless, itchy or burning legs are a common complaint, and scratching often makes the irritation worse rather than better.

Nighttime Leg Cramps and Restless Legs

Leg cramps and restless legs are more common at night because of the prolonged inactivity and natural decrease in circulation as your body relaxes. Falling asleep can be a lot harder with this type of discomfort.

Skin Changes Around the Ankles

Longer-standing pressure in the veins can lead to visible changes in the skin near your ankles, including darkening, discoloration or a thicker, tougher texture. These changes tend to develop gradually and are a sign that you need someone to take a closer look.

How to Cool Down Symptoms at Home This Summer

These simple steps won’t cure varicose veins, but they can take the edge off uncomfortable days while you wait for your appointment.

  • Rinse Your Legs With Cool Water: A quick cool rinse in the shower helps narrow dilated veins and relieves that swollen, heavy feeling at the end of a hot day.
  • Wear Loose, Breathable Clothing: Tight waistbands and snug fabrics restrict circulation where you need it to flow freely. Looser, lightweight clothing helps blood move more easily.
  • Lower Your Salt Intake: Try to avoid some of the extra salty summer foods like hot dogs and fries, and add in more whole foods that are full of fiber and nutrients to help keep down fluid retention. Don’t forget to drink water!
  • Use Compression Early: Put your compression socks on in the morning, before swelling has a chance to start, so your veins get support throughout the entire day rather than after symptoms set in.
  • Elevate Your Legs: Resting your legs above heart level for a few minutes before bed helps drain pooled blood back toward your heart and can quiet restless, cramping legs at night.

When Summer Symptoms Point to a Deeper Problem

At-home steps can help you manage your symptoms, but won’t address the root cause. If your symptoms keep returning or worsen year after year, or if you notice visible bulging veins and skin changes, this is a sign of venous insufficiency, where the valves in your veins are no longer closing properly. At this point, you will need a vein doctor to diagnose your condition and help find the right treatments for lasting relief. If left untreated, venous insufficiency tends to progress.

How Dr. Ninia Finds the Root of the Problem

Dr. Jerry Ninia performs his own diagnostic ultrasound to see what’s happening beneath the surface of your skin. The veins you can see are frequently fed by deeper reflux, and that hidden source is what makes symptoms return after treatment. With more than 30 years of vascular experience and certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist, Dr. Ninia uses imaging to pinpoint root causes and make better decisions for his patients.

Treatment Options for Relief That Lasts Beyond Summer

Minimally Invasive Procedures That Close Problem Veins

For larger problem veins, treatments like endolaser vein therapy, VenaSeal, and Varithena close the affected vein so blood reroutes to healthy ones. There’s no hospital stay involved, and patients walk out and return to their normal routine the same day.

Treating Small or Surface Veins

Smaller veins respond well to sclerotherapy, which collapses the vein with a simple injection, and large surface veins can be removed with ambulatory phlebectomy, which removes veins through tiny incisions. Often, different methods can be combined to address more than one type of vein.

Finding the Right Treatment for You

There’s no single best treatment for everyone. Dr. Ninia personally selects the approach that fits your anatomy and your symptoms, and he’ll tell you honestly what you need and what you don’t. You’ll never be pushed into a procedure that won’t help you, and every consultation and treatment is performed by Dr. Ninia himself rather than handed off to someone you’ve never met.
