Effective Solutions for Spider Veins on Long Island
You may have heard that spider veins are “just” a cosmetic concern. But for many people, that doesn’t tell the full story. It doesn’t speak to the daily frustration of avoiding shorts in summer, the self-consciousness at the beach or the emotional toll of not feeling comfortable in your skin.
Spider veins are one of the most common concerns we see at the Varicose Vein Center, and they are treatable with the right care. Dr. Jerry Ninia can help you find a solution that works so you can feel confident showing your legs again.
Spider veins are small, damaged blood vessels that are visible just under your skin’s surface. They appear as thin, web-like patterns in red, purple or blue. It is most common to develop them on the legs or face, and women are more likely to have them than men.
Spider veins usually don’t cause symptoms. They are flat and usually measure less than 1 millimeter wide. In comparison, varicose veins are raised above the skin surface, larger in size and may be symptomatic.
Most spider veins are harmless. However, many people want to treat them to improve their skin’s appearance and feel comfortable in a wider range of clothing styles.
Here’s why patients choose the Varicose Vein Center for spider vein treatment:
At our Port Jefferson Village vein clinic, we focus on minimally invasive vein treatments that get you back to your normal routine quickly.
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for spider vein treatment. It’s the primary method Dr. Ninia uses because it’s proven, precise and delivers the most consistent results.
During sclerotherapy, Dr. Ninia injects a specialized solution directly into your spider veins using an ultra-fine needle. This solution causes the vein walls to collapse. Over the following weeks, your body absorbs the treated vein tissue, and the spider veins significantly fade from view.
The procedure is performed right in our office with no downtime. Most patients achieve optimal results in two to four sessions.
The timing of spider vein treatment is a personal decision. Because they are not medically harmful, you can treat them whenever you feel self-conscious about their appearance.
Fall or winter are popular times of year for treatment. This gives your skin time to heal before summer, when you are more likely to wear clothing that reveals your legs. However, there’s no reason to wait if spider veins are affecting your quality of life. We treat patients year-round.
At the Varicose Vein Center, our goal is to help you enjoy better vein health for life. Lifestyle measures support healthy circulation and may slow the development of spider veins over time.
Regular exercise, particularly low-impact exercise like walking and swimming, promotes healthy blood flow. If you stand or sit for long periods at work, take short movement breaks every hour.
Maintaining a healthy weight reduces pressure on your leg veins, while a low-sodium diet helps minimize swelling that can make leg veins more prominent.
Excessive sun exposure can damage blood vessel walls. Apply sunscreen daily on any exposed areas.
Limit how often you wear restrictive garments like skinny jeans and shapewear, which can decrease circulation in your legs. Wear supportive, well-fitting shoes and limit high heels to special occasions.
If you work in a sedentary environment, counteract the effects of the lack of movement by elevating your legs at the end of each workday.

Asked By You, Answered By Dr. Ninia
Your spider veins will significantly fade, but they may not disappear completely. The improvement is usually dramatic enough that my patients feel comfortable wearing shorts and skirts again.
Treated veins generally don’t return, but you can develop new ones. You may benefit from maintenance sessions once or twice per year to keep your legs looking and feeling great.
There’s no “best” age. I’ve treated patients from their 20s to their 80s. If spider veins bother you enough to seek treatment, and you’re in good health, age isn’t a limiting factor.
I recommend waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Spider veins often improve on their own postpartum. If they’re still bothering you six months after delivery, come see me and we’ll make a plan.
Absolutely. About 15% of my spider vein patients are men. The treatments work the same regardless of gender.
Many of my patients have both types of veins. In those cases, I treat the varicose veins first, since they often contribute to spider vein formation. Then, once the deeper circulation issues are resolved, I address any remaining spider veins.
You don’t have to live with spider veins that make you self-conscious. Many patients come to us after years of covering up, only to wish they’d addressed the issue sooner.
